FAO: Peter Tyndall, Arts Council of Wales - RE: Withdrawal of Funding from CPR
Dear Mr Tyndall
It was with great sadness and incomprehension that I read of ACW intention to withdraw revenue funding from CPR.
I write as an arts professional who is now engaged on a NESTA sponsored Clore Fellowship as part of a programme to develop the quality of cultural leadership across England, Wales and Ireland.
My personal & professional journey to this very exciting juncture is in no small part due to the very concrete opportunities available to me from CPR during my time resident in Cardiff (1990 - 1998)
The consistently high quality and innovative range of the artists and
companies that were brought to Wales had a real affect on my artistic
practice and my ability to advocate for the vital role that arts play in the lives of individuals and communities.
The 'cultural leadership' demonstrated by Judie Christie & Richard Gough through their programming of workshops and performances was a true inspiration to me and a distinctive model that Wales can be rightly proud of.
With ACW expressed intention to develop a National Theatre of Wales while addressing front-line delivery it is very unclear why you would withdraw funding from a cultural institution such as CPR at this time.
CPR would enrich the training and opportunities available to emerging
practitioners in Wales as part of a National Theatre initiative. This would make for a well informed and experienced approach to international practice and linkage that would surely be an important element of any National Theatre initiative.
Logic would therefore suggest that ACW would fulfill its' role as a national development agency for the arts far better by working with CPR to fulfill this role in a coordinated development of a National Theatre.
I sincerely hope that in your position as Chief Executive of ACW you will support the reinstatement of revenue funding to CPR forthwith.
Yours Sincerely
Gavin Clayton FRSA
