Re: Funding Situation at CPR, Wales
To whom it may concern,
I am writing on behalf of several colleagues of mine and myself who work in the arts here in New Zealand in support for the Centre of Performance Research losing its funding.
The centre is without doubt an international leader in its field and we feel that for it to lose its funding would present the global arts community and its industries with a black cultural void. For performance artists such as us the CPR is a significant place to connect with as it provides a platform for showing work, dialoguing over work, connecting and networking with other artists, doing workshops, as well as a place to generate performance. Without the CPR, there sadly appears to be little or no reason for artists such as us to visit Wales and show work/do workshops (despite for instance me being part Welsh).
From my experience, when artists in my field around the world think of Wales, they always mention the CPR - it is clear that it puts Wales on the map as a place of the arts - moreover, the cutting edge arts. This is of course, in addition to the service it provides Welsh and British artists. Although I have not yet visited the centre, I am planning to link up with it and currently keep up-to-date with its events, but will not be able to do so if the centre closes down due to funding cuts.
Considering the above, we ask that you continue to fund the CPR at the current level and not withdraw funding from it. We see your decision to withdraw funding as a grave mistake and one that will take years to rectify. There is no other centre like the CPR anywhere in the world.
Should you wish to discuss this matter with me more, or have nay questions, I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you,
Yours,
Mark Harvey
