Re: Arts Council of Wales
I am shocked and angry to hear that the Arts Council of Wales has decided to withdraw revenue funding from the CPR whose work has been of extreme importance not only for theatre practitioners, researchers and audiences in Wales but world-wide. I have always admired and respected the excellent, diverse work of the CPR and am dismayed about the fact that considerations of affordability have so blatantly clouded the ACW’s judgement and resulted in such a misguided, wrong decision.
Speaking from within a university context, I am deeply worried about the consequences of these funding cuts for local and international student communities who have been benefiting (creatively and intellectually) from the educational value of the work of the CPR. The CPR provides a platform for intercultural collaboration, exchange and dialogue and it has shown a manifest capacity for awakening an enthusiasm and curiosity for the arts especially amongst the young members of our society. It is a great pity and shame that the Arts Council of Wales does not recognise the importance of this kind of work.
