Nigel Watson - Performance maker and teacher, Wales

To Whom It may Concern,

I am writing to offer my strongest support to the CPR and add my voice to the massed choirs of those asking the ACW to reconsider its stated intention to withdraw revenue funding from the organisation from July 2008.

It seems overwhelmingly clear to me that this theatre organisation (unique in both Wales and the rest of Britain) has accumulated decades of experience in opening new vistas, proposing fresh sources of inspiration to Welsh/Wales-based performing arts practitioners. The creation of new community choirs & the strengthening of existing singing groups has been a notable ‘ripple effect’ of the exceptional “Giving Voice” Workshop gatherings.

Cumulatively, the regular courses, classes, touring performances& feedback sessions held throughout Wales, have constituted a major stimulus to the industry, for professionals and enthusiasts alike. Such regular programmes of opportunities have been particularly important to young /emerging performers close to completing their initial training (e.g. in either R.W.C.M.D. or in University Departments) in persuading them to stay in this country and commit their creative energies and visions to enriching and developing the performing arts landscape of Wales.

Clearly, withdrawal of revenue funding can only mean the company’s closure or emigration from Wales.
Such a closure would leave a gaping hole in this landscape and cause a massive loss of resources for Welsh artists to connect with colleagues worldwide; it would radically diminish the confidence of artists in Wales in attempting to attract inspirational collaborators or teachers from abroad, and adversely affect those attempting to promote a vibrant, contemporary, diverse Welsh performance culture in the international market place.

Such a loss would be irretrievable and must not be allowed to happen!
