Paul Iles - Principal Lecturer, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts

It is dismal news that the Centre for Performance Research may be losing revenue funding from the Welsh Arts Council. The gift of theatre bibliographer, the late John Cavanagh's collection of theatre books is arguably the best collection of world theatre monographs and iconography in the world. That it should have been donated to the CPR was a vote of great confidence in the international outlook and potential of the Centre to attract scholars and theatre makers who would bridge the gap between the academy and the practical theatre. The new National Theatre of Wales, amongst many other organisations, will find the collection to be invaluable for dramaturgy and education work. CPR now has a collection of international significance: whatever reservations the Arts Council may have about the CPR, does it appreciate the potential for CPR to forge new partnerships with theatres and theatre scholars in the UK and worldwide?
