Dear Richard and Judie
I was aghast to hear of the ACW's decision to withdraw revenue funding from CPR and offer funding on a project by project basis. this in no way takes into account the nature of the important work CPR does, its standing within the international theatre research community, and the long-term needs of such an organisation. It's almost as if the people taking these decisions have no idea what it is that CPR actually does.
The development of serious-minded and innovative but accessible research into performance is an enormously delicate act of expertise, imagination, and courage. The vast range of activities facilitated by CPR must be tied in to a coherent and stable organisation. Being based at the University of Wales is crucial to its reputation and its output. I am sure I'm not alone in being very distressed at the idea of this incredibly significant institution being threatened in this way, after such a long record (extensively documented in our recent publication 'A Performance Cosmology') of outstanding work.
Warmest wishes at this time
Talia
